Mixtape May: How should we be more like children?

Week 2 – Jeff Maness – May 13th, 2018

Jesus doesn’t want us to be childish in our faith, He wants us to be childlike. However, a childlike faith may not be what we typically understand. In this message, we look at the ways that Jesus wants us to be more childlike.

Mix Tape May: Childlike

“Alice told me she couldn’t eat crabs or any other crushed Asians.” (crustaceans)

“You could have knocked me over with a fender.” (feather)

“Having only one wife is called monotony.” (monogamy)

Matthew 18:1-6 1 About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” 2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven. 5 “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me. 6 But if you cause one of these little ones who trusts in me to fall into sin, it would be better for you to have a large millstone tied around your neck and be drowned in the depths of the sea.”

Big Idea: Jesus doesn’t want us to be childish in our faith, He wants us to be childlike. 2

Big Question: How should we act more like children?

Matthew 18:3-4 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

1. We should rely like kids

The first step toward entering into the kingdom of God is to become as little children: lowly in heart, knowing ourselves utterly ignorant and helpless, and hanging fully on our Father who is in heaven, for a supply of all our wants and needs. — Benson Commentary

Psalm 119:5-8 5 Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees! 6 Then I will not be ashamed when I compare my life with your commands. 7 As I learn your righteous regulations, I will thank you by living as I should! 8 I will obey your decrees. Please don’t give up on me!

Matthew 18:5 5 “And anyone who welcomes a little child like this on my behalf is welcoming me.”
